Check a dealer's maintenance estimate for upsells before you approve it
Paste the service advisor's estimate and your car's maintenance schedule into AI to see which items are due and which can wait.
Part of: What to do if a mechanic overcharges you
1. Copy this prompt
Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok (the free versions work), then replace the [highlighted brackets] with your details. Leave out account numbers and SSNs.
My [YEAR MAKE MODEL] has [MILES] miles. I drive mostly [highway / city / short trips] and [do / don't] tow. The dealer recommends: [PASTE ESTIMATE WITH PRICES]. My owner's manual schedule says: [PASTE RELEVANT SECTION]. 1) For each item, tell me whether it's due per the schedule, early, or depends on inspection. 2) Tell me which items to question and what evidence to ask for. 3) Write a short, polite reply approving only what's due.

What to expect, and what to do if they say no
What happened when people tried it
Reported She says skipping it saved her $400. Motor1 notes a rear differential service is generally recommended every 30,000–60,000 miles and that delaying it could cause problems, so the AI's advice may not have been right for her car.
What the AI did: At her Jeep's 80,000-mile service, a TikTok creator was quoted $1,800 (she expected about $1,000). She asked ChatGPT to go over the estimate; it said to skip the rear differential service unless she towed heavy loads, calling it a likely upsell.

Why this works
The problem: Dealer service visits often add fluid flushes, filters and services that may not be due yet for your car and driving.
How AI helps: AI can compare the estimate with your owner's manual maintenance schedule and mileage, and give you questions to ask before approving anything.
